ولد عام 1915 في ولاية ويسكنسن الأميركية وتوفي عام 1985 إثر نوبة قلبية في ولاية كاليفورنيا،والده كان رجلا معروفا ووالدته كانت عازفة بيانو جميلة،امتلك ويلز منذ صغره عدة مواهب فنية منها ألعاب الخفة والرسم وعزف البيانو.
بعد أن توفيت والدته وهو في السابعة دار أورسن العالم مع والده الذي وافته المنية أيضا وترك ويلز شاباً بعمر الخامسة عشر وحيداً برعاية الدكتور موريس برينستن ،في عام 1931 تخرج من مدرسة تود في مدينة وودستوك ودخل الجامعة متفوقاً حيث حصل على جائزة جامعية وهي رحلة سياحية إلى معالم ايرلندا وخلال هذه الرحلة حاول أورسن دخول مسرح لندن وبرودوي ولكنه لم ينجح بذلك فسافر إلى المغرب وبعدها إلى اسبانيا وبقي يحاول كسر الحاجز الذي يمنعه من دخول المسرح الذي يعشق دون فائدة إلى أن التقى ثورنتن ويلدر وألكسندر ولكوت حيث قاما بتعريف أورسن على شركة الإنتاج كاثرين كورنيل حيث أخرج معها عمله الأول الذي كان بعنوان Tybalt عام 1934 وتزوج أيضاً في نفس العام وظهر في أول ظهور فني له عن طريق الإذاعة.
في عام 1937 تعاون ويلز مع جون هاوسمان وأنشا معه مسرح Mercury وعام 1938 أنتج وأخرج العمل الذي اشتهر به والذي عرف فيما بعد باسم The War Of The Worlds .
أما أولى أعمال ويلز السينمائية الجماهيرية كانت فيلم Citizen Kane الذي لم يحقق ربحاً مادياً ولكنه أعتبر من أهم الأفلام السينمائية وذلك الأمر بباقي أعمال ويلز التي لم تحقق نجاحاً مادياً يذكر لكنها كانت تحصد الجوائز على الدوام ومن أهم تلك الأعمال كان فيلمه الأميركي Touch Of Evil الذي حصد جائزة American Film Institute's Life Time Achievementوأيضاً صنف من بين أهم المخرجين الأميركين على الإطلاق.
تزوج أوسن ويلز ثلاث مرات وأنجب ولداً من كل مرة وكان زواجه الأول عام 1934 من فيرجينيا نيكلسن أما الزواج الثاني فكان عام 1943 من ريتا هالورث أما زوجته الأخيرة التي بقيت معه حتى وفاته كانت باولا موري .
عرف أورسن ويلز المبدع بصوته العميق المميز الذي عرفه جمهور العالم وكان يميزه من بين كل الأصوات.
حصل خلال مسيرته الفنية على الأوسكار وعلى 23 جائزة سينمائية وترشح 17 مرة لنيل جوائز أخرى.
